Why we wrote the publications?
More and more people are travelling and travelling for a variety of reasons. It may be a holiday, or visiting family and friends. It could also be part of a work experience, or an adventure trip. Sometimes it is ticking off another place to visit that was included in one’s bucket list.
Most travellers undertake their journey without incident, but sometimes the journey does not go smoothly for a variety of reasons. Flight delays, lost luggage, crowded airport terminals and other factors can intrude into the experience. What is worse though is if illness interrupts the journey which can turn the anticipated holiday into a veritable nightmare.
Being prepared (and informed) can assist to a large extent in reducing one’s risk of contracting an illness, and if one does, at least there is an action plan for one to follow. It was with this in mind that the South African Society of Travel Medicine embarked on putting together information for you, the traveller, so that your travels are enjoyable and memorable.
I have wandered all my life, and I have also travelled; the difference between the two being this, that we wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfillment – Hilaire Belloc.
The SASTM’s mission is to guide the profession in all aspects relating to the practice of travel medicine, liaise with the travel industry, consult with relevant authorities, advise the public and collaborate nationally and internationally on all aspects relating to Travel Medicine.
